What is a gastric balloon?

The specialists at Oregon Weight Loss Surgery use the Orbera Intragastric Balloon, a silicone balloon inserted into the stomach during a simple 15-minute outpatient endoscopic procedure.

After insertion, the balloon is filled with a patient-specific and appropriate amount of saline. The ballon’s expansion takes up space in the stomach so the patient feels fuller sooner during meals and eats less as a result.

After the procedure, the staff at Oregon Weight Loss Surgery will work with the patient to develop a nutrition plan that will help them stay on track to achieve their weight-loss goals.

Risks of Orbera Intragastric Balloon

The Food and Drug Administration approves the Orbera Intragastric Balloon for patients with a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40.

The Orbera balloon poses minimal risk to most patients. However, it is not recommended for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding; people with drug or alcohol addictions; people on a daily aspirin prescription regimen; or people who take anticoagulants or anti-inflammatory agents.

Side effects of the gastric balloon can include gastrointestinal-related inflammatory diseases and gastrointestinal bleeding. Please talk with your doctor about whether or not gastric balloon surgery is right for you.

Possible Complications of Gastric Balloon Surgery

  • Device intolerance
  • Dehydration
  • Gastric outlet obstruction
  • Gastric perforation

The Orbera Intragastric Balloon is a temporary procedure. Placement should not exceed six months. A second procedure is required to remove the balloon.
