Clinic Owner, Surgeon and Medical Director of the Legacy Good Samaritan Weight Management Institute.
Dr. Emma Patterson developed a passion for bariatric surgery during her fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She has 15 years of experience and has performed over 3,500 laparoscopic bariatric surgeries.
Dr. Patterson was the first surgeon in the Northwest to specialize in laparoscopic bariatric surgery. She was also the first to perform a laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding with the Lap-Band in the Northwest.
In 2000, Dr. Patterson established herself in private practice in Portland, Oregon, and was the first Medical Director of the bariatric program at Legacy Good Samaritan. In her 14-year tenure as the Medical Director, Dr. Patterson led the program to become a nationally recognized Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.
As a recognized leader in U.S. laparoscopic bariatric surgery, she has performed over 3,500 laparoscopic bariatric surgery procedures. Annually, she performs hundreds of procedures including laparoscopic adjustable gastric bands, laparoscopic gastric bypasses and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies. In addition to these primary procedures, she has mastered revisional bariatric procedures, is an investigator in the NIH funded consortium, Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (LABS) and is the principal investigator on many many clinical trials.
Training surgeons from around the world in the techniques of laparoscopic bariatric surgery and publishing more than 100 journal articles, abstracts and book chapters are very important to Dr. Patterson and to her work at Oregon Weight Loss Surgery. Dr. Patterson also serves as an expert witness in medical malpractice cases nationwide.
