  Emma Patterson, MD, FRCSC, FACS

Medical Director of the Legacy Good Samaritan Obesity Institute

Dr. Emma Jean Patterson, a British native, received her medical and surgical training in Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver, Canada. Although laparoscopic surgery came naturally to Dr. Patterson, it was not until her fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City in 1999, that she truly developed a passion for bariatric surgery.

Dr. Patterson was the first surgeon in the Northwest to specialize in laparoscopic bariatric surgery. She was the first to perform a laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding with the Lap-Band® and was the first to perform the StomaphyX™ gastric bypass revision endoscopically.

In 2000, Dr. Patterson established herself in private practice in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Patterson took over the Medical Directorship of the bariatric program at Legacy Good Samaritan in its infancy and led it to become the nationally recognized Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence it is today.

Dr. Emma Patterson is a recognized leader in US laparoscopic bariatric surgery and has performed over 2,000 laparoscopic bariatric surgery procedures. Annually, Dr. Patterson performs hundreds of laparoscopic adjustable gastric bands and laparoscopic gastric bypasses. In addition to these primary procedures, she has mastered revisional procedures, and is the principal researcher on many studies of investigational devices.

Dr. Emma Patterson has trained hundreds of surgeons around the world in the techniques of laparoscopic bariatric surgery and has published more than 100 journal articles, abstracts and book chapters. Dr. Patterson is available for consultation by appointment at our Portland, OR office.
